Incorporating technology into the outdoor activities was an important part of our solution. The team developed three different apps that will be available for download onto an iPhone, iPad, or Android tablet. Each app corresponds with an interpretative sign that will be located along the trail.
The topics of the planned kiosks are History of the Llano Estacado, Flora of the South Plains, and Fauna of the Grasslands Ecosystem. The use of iPads along the trail will be encouraged so that students can take advantage of the many apps created by Audubon and used for identifying wildflowers, birds, and tracks. Brandon Trebitowski is an app creator for Apple Software in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is working with the team to develop a game-based app with avatars, adding a professional element to the trail technology.
Geocaching is a treasure hunt using a handheld GPS that allows the user to search for a specific geographic location using clues found online. Children have been taught to create caches along the trail with educational value and the team has taken students on many geo-caching trips in this area.
